이 그래픽 노블은 죽음에 대한 불안을 그린 것이다.

단순히 죽음으로 모든 것이 끝난다는 그런 불안뿐 아니라 내 마지막이 내가 원하는 모습이 아닐 가능성에 대한 불안 말이다. 그런 불안과 더불어 과거에 겪은 상실을 소화해내어 실체화하고 싶었다. 스스로 죽음에 대해 탐구하고 현재의 결론을 얻기까지 과정을 화가와 연인의 이야기 속에 담았다. 어떤 것은 말로 표현하기 힘들기 때문에, 가능한 글자를 아끼고 그림에 중심을 두어 이야기를 전하는 책이다. 이미지의 구성, 톤, 컬러와 빛, 대상과 상황 등의 그림 언어에 더해 짤막한 텍스트 한 줄이 얼마나 많은 정보와 감정을 전달할 수 있을지 실험한 것이기도 하다.

다소 불친절한 스토리텔링으로 보일 수 있지만 오히려 그런 불친절함이 독자에게 특유의 매력으로 다가갈 수 있으면 좋겠다.죽음에 있어 감정적 충격과 슬픔, 공포만이 전부는 아니며, 죽음을 알면 알수록 상상 속의 다소 추상적인 감정반응에서 현실 속 사실이자 현상이 된다. 내 죽음은 필연적으로 일어날 현상이다. 내가 사랑하는 이들도 예외는 아니다. 이것은 몸을 통해 죽음과 상실을 마주하는 이야기이며 작별하는 법에 대한 고민이다.

This graphic novel is about death anxiety.

I tried to materialize that anxiety -that my end may not be what I want it to be- by processing the losses I experienced in the past into the story of an artist who explored her mortality after the loss of her lover.

By conserving the words as much as possible and focusing on the pictures -In addition to the pictorial language of composition, tone, color, light, and object- it is an experiment on how much information and emotion a picture with a single line of text can convey. It may seem like a rather unkind way of telling a story, but I hope such unkindness can approach you as a unique charm.

Emotional shock, sadness, and fear are not everything about death. The more you know about death, the more abstract emotional reactions in your imagination become a facet of life. Death is inevitable. My loved ones are no exception. It is a story about facing mortality and loss through the body and learning to say goodbye.
